PROPOSAL FOR EMERGENCY FLOOD RELIEF - 2020
For I was hungry, and you gave Me food …
… ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of
the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’
(Matt. 25: 35, 40)
The nation of India has been severely suffering from the dreadful blow of COVID-19. More than 7.6 million people have got infected and about 150,000 people have been killed. While the pandemic is still destroying a large number of people, aggressively grabbing more than 60,000 of them daily, a sweeping cyclone has dreadfully hit the coastal area of Andhra Pradesh, adding an indescribable amount of fuel to apparently unquenchable and uncontrollable infectious fire - COVID-19.
The Godavari, being the biggest river in South India, flows through several Indian states and blends into the Bay of Bengal at Godavari Districts, Andhra Pradesh. The river usually overflows her banks during monsoon season and floods the adjacent villages to some extent almost every year and the people are used to it. But the floods this time are huge and massive and the second biggest one in the last 45 years.
Once in every decade, this region experiences somewhat big floods, during which they vacate their villages and after the floodwaters are removed in a day or two, they get back to normal life quickly. But this time it is entirely a different scenario. COVID-19 has already robbed people of their money, jobs, business profits, and work, etc... which has very badly affected their income. Now, these floods have taken away the little they were thinking of surviving with.
2. DEVASTATED AREA:
The recent floods have had a tremendous effect on two Indian states Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The city of Hyderabad has seen unimaginable devastation. Several districts in the state of Andhra Pradesh have also seen drastic destruction.
In the East Godavari District alone, which has seen more devastation than any other district of Andhra Pradesh state, more than 80 villages have been flooded, and the water level is reported to be from hip level to neck level. Floodwaters entered approximately 33,000 houses and more than 180,000 people lost their shelter, food, clothing, and other belongings. Most of the houses are thatched huts and the walls are built of mud. As these flood waters melted the mud walls, thousands of huts have already been collapsed and washed away. So far 78 deaths have been reported.
We have chosen 22 villages which have suffered the worst sweeping. Most of the people in these villages are very poor and their houses are just huts. The people lost everything including their hope for the future. Our hearts were melted like water when we visited them in their temporary shelters to serve them food and water.
The below maps show you the area that is most damaged.
They also show you the names and locations of the villages that need immediate help.
State: Andhra Pradesh,
District: East Godavari,
The below list contains the names of the villages
and the number of the poorest of the poor families affected severely.
(The list does not contain the number of all the families affected but only the poorest of the poor.)
3. WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE:
Almost all of the victims have nothing left to cook and eat. There is water everywhere but not a drop of it can be drunk as every drop of it is contaminated.
In all these villages nearly 35,000 people are in need of immediate food and water. They are suffering greatly due to hunger and thirst. We are making packets of cooked food and distributing it to the victims in a couple of villages. There are still many people who are in urgent need of food.
A. IMMEDIATE HELP – COOKED FOOD & WATER PACKETS:
Pastor Poorna & Deepu,
helping flood victims with food packages recently
Maybe in a week’s time, the floods waters will completely be withdrawn from the villages when the people began to move to their villages. For them, it can nearly take a month to get back to their normal life.
They will have to rebuild their collapsed huts, buy cooking utensils, and other needed things. So, we would like to have them helped with food for one month so that it will be a lot easier for them to bring themselves back to normal life.

5. HOW YOU CAN BE A BLESSING:
There is no doubt that the need put before you is enormously massive. In fact, it is quite hard for a single person or a single church or organization to do so much as required above. However, when people work together, a lot more can be easily achieved. It’s true that everyone cannot help everyone but everyone can help someone.
We pray and believe the Lord is going to touch the hearts of the people who are going to read this request. We earnestly request you to do whatever is possible for you. We would like to give you an example below to make things easier for you.
1. For instance, you want to help victims with food & water packets:
To help 100 victims with a one-time meal, it will cost 48 USD
To help 500 victims with a one-time meal, it will cost 240 USD
To help 1000 victims with a one-time meal, it will cost 480 USD
2. For instance, you would like to help victims' families with food for 1 month:
To help 10 families with food for one month, it will cost 565 USD
To help 50 families with food for one month, it will cost 2825 USD
To help 100 families with food for one month, it will cost 5650 USD
The need is massive and it is urgent. Having lost everything, the victims are hungry, thirsty, half-naked, just looking out for hands that can hug them, feed them, clothe them, and wipe their tears.
We are praying and working towards helping 10,000 families. Even then, we will have done very little. But this is what the Lord has placed in our hearts for now. We, with all our hearts, request you to join your hands with us in this great venture. We pray you will make use of this opportunity to wipe the tears of these suffering people.
Another wonderful thing is that it gives us a golden opportunity to show the love of God to these idol worshippers practically. We give them food but it will not end there. As they will taste the love of God through our love and care, it paves a great way to win their hearts for Christ. With the food, we also invite them to accept the Lord Jesus as their personal Saviour and the Lord as their souls are far more precious than their bodies.
